LL.M Programme

Why do we think you should study law in Gothenburg?

At the Department of Law in Gothenburg we take an active interest in the development and evaluation of pedagogical methods. Since autumn 2004 the LL.M programme is given according to a new curriculum. The new programme involve hands-on problem solution as a complement to theoretical studies and students meet with practicing professionals from an early stage of the education. During the programme the students are taught to apply different perspectives of law and are given the opportunity to try different professional roles with the help of realistic scenarios. Roleplay and storyline pedagogy has shown to animate lectures and exercises as well as give deeper understanding of the law and its effects. Individual papers and teamwork assignments are combined with more traditional exams. The Department has adopted the latest in information technology and multimedia tools are employed in teaching.

The first three years of the LL.M programme consist of obligatory courses in Private Law, Company Law, Commercial Law, Employment Law, Family Law, Environmental Law, Public Law, Tax Law, Intellectual Property Law, Legal Jurisprudence, Feminist Jurisprudence, Criminal Law, etc. After the obligatory courses students specialise by choosing a 1,5 years master programme.

The Department of Law is a part of the School of Economics and Commercial Law, thus unique possibilities for cross-disciplinary collaboration with other departments are offered. The Department also works closely with Chalmers University of Technology and several departments of the University of Gothenburg. The LL.M programme in Gothenburg is compatible with the Bologna Agreement, which has the purpose to harmonize higher education in Europe. The harmonization process makes it easier for Swedish students to study abroad and for international students to study in Gothenburg. The Department cooperates and has student exchange with a large number of international universities.

We think that the study environment in Gothenburg is wonderful. In Gothenburg you will find all the advantages of a city and the largest university in Sweden with an active student life right in the city centre.

The national LL.M programme is instructed in Swedish, but for non-swedish speakers the Department offers a number of optional courses and year-long master programmes, instructed in English. Please read more about courses for international students here.
